March 2022 Update
The ZERO Carbon Commitment is an Interchain Foundation Earth Program initiative for Cosmos chains to achieve net-zero carbon emissions for their network validator node infrastructure, and then at all levels of their operations.
The Earth Program is implementing Research and Development, strategic partnerships, advocacy and education for blockchain and related technologies to support socio-economic sustainability, ecological regeneration, and climate action.

Governance Proposal
Some major update has happened since the previous post.
Regen Network has issued a Natural Carbon Ton - NCT - which is a fungible token backed by real world carbon credit assets issued from natural carbon capture projects (forests, etc). This NCT is going live trading on Osmosis DEX in the coming days. You can find the full set up discussion here.
With this new ability to trade carbon credits on-chain, the Earth Program team is sharing an easily replicable governance proposal to help protocols offset their carbon footprint. You can see the first proposal submission by IXO's Impact Hub here.
This proposal is providing a methodology for a protocol to estimate their footprint, thanks to the tools developped by Regen Network. You can read more about their Carbon Footprint Calculator here and about other methodologies here.
Based on this results, a proposal can be submitted to the protocol's vote. A majority vote will allocate Community Pool's funds for buying and retiring an amount of NCTs greater than the protocol's carbon footprint, making the protocol's carbon emission below ZERO.
We invite all protocols having access to Osmosis DEX (for buying the NCT) and Regen Network (for retiring the NCT) to start looking into their carbon footprint total emission and use the template proposal for an easily replicable activation.
